Are you for real?

I expect that most of you reading this will be aware of “The Sims”, a virtual reality game that you can play on your PC. The player of the game assumes an almost god-like role and creates a family, which can then live a life, not unlike our own. For example a person can be created by choosing from options, such as eye and hair colour, ethnic background, clothing, even personality traits! The virtual person/people can then “live” as interesting or mundane a life, as the player so wishes.

In recent years, it has been suggested that we are in fact all living in a simulation ourselves, and when you delve further into that suggestion, it seems increasingly feasible, if somewhat scary!
With technology advancing at the rate that it is at the moment, surely it would be possible to create a computer that can simulate a world of our own choosing. This means that many of the scenarios in recent sci-fi movies and TV programs might not be as fictitious as they were once deemed to be. And if you or I decided to take part in a virtual reality environment, wouldn’t we want to re-create our dead friends and relatives and live with them once again? So, have my forbearers re-created me? And does it also mean that someone has created a virtual world in which someone has created a virtual world…?
The arguments for and against this theory always seem to lead back to a very high probability of us being in a virtual world.
I recommend anyone who is interested in this subject to visit http://www.simulation-argument.com/simulation.html
It’s a fascinating read! If you have any comments or ideas, I’d love to hear from you!

Yahoo Groups...

I run a couple of Yahoo Groups, that I started a few years ago and I'm so proud of all my members and the standard of their work.

Bead Makers is a group for people that create their own beads. There are many different types of bead making techniques and materials, such as glass, polymer clay, paper and our members are producing some amazing work all the time. Our photo albums are always crammed full of eye candy! Everyone is very helpful and happy to offer advice .

Amateur Glass Painters is a smaller group in which our members have been learning new techniques and offering help and appraisal to each other. Although aimed primarily at non professional glass painters, we welcome more experienced painters who are happy to help the less experienced members.

In both my groups, you can be sure of a warm welcome! I will try to encourage discussion in the groups regularly, but the more shy members are welcome to lurk if they so wish!

Dilemma of the Day

With Christmas nearly upon us, thoughts turn to cards. Now, I’m no Ebenezer Scrooge, but I am financially very embarrassed, and this is not a temporary blip, this is life long financial embarassment. Last year, I decided to make my Christmas cards, in order to save money and show how special everyone is to me. This turned out to be a big headache and much more expensive than if I had bought them. So this year, I decided to buy them instead and bought a box of cards. Problem solved? You’d think so wouldn’t you, but the guilt has started to set in, because the closest members of my family deserve far better than a “cheapy-out-of-a-box” card! The upshot is, I now have to buy said family members, special cards with special verses. The next problem is that the verses are always unsuitable. Step families from all over the world will undoubtedly understand what that’s like, as will people whose families are many hundreds of miles away and hardly seen all year. And where on earth can one buy a card that says “To My Ex-Step-Father and his Wife”?
